This month, while putting together this very feature, we had a sneak preview of what could be a brave new dawn for home cinema. The Philips 21:9 screen matches almost exactly the 2.39:1 aspect ratio of feature films, which means you’re seeing your favourite movies nigh-on how the director wanted – minimal image stretching, no letterboxing. The result is incredibly captivating, not least because the 21:9 also happens to be the fastest LCD in the world, with a 0.1ms response time.
This 56-inch Ambilight-backed slab of televisual panache will turn heads like Monroe in her prime. The only problem? It’ll leave normal TV – and TVs – looking horribly narrow in scope…
